Bartlett Got Its Golf Course Back
Quail Ridge, the only golf course in Bartlett, Tennessee, reopened in early September after a two-year closure and a town-wide rescue effort.
In early September, Quail Ridge Golf Course in Bartlett, Tennessee — the only golf course in town — reopened after nearly two years of sitting quiet. A course that was very nearly turned into something else entirely is back to being eighteen holes of public grass, and the town showed up to prove it wanted it that way.
What happened
Quail Ridge held its grand reopening on a Monday, welcoming back golfers, shoppers, and curious visitors to the 18-hole facility on Altruria Road after nearly two years of closure and a lengthy public rescue effort by the city, as reported by WREG in Memphis and Hoodline. City officials said the place was packed with golfers, shoppers, snackers, and the curious just checking out the upgrades — among them a new pro shop and a new restaurant. The hot weather didn't stop folks from teeing off, and Memphis Tigers head basketball coach Penny Hardaway was one of the first to play the course.
That's the whole story in one image: a September scorcher in West Tennessee, and the parking lot is full anyway.
How close it came to not happening
This one almost went the other way. Quail Ridge was shut down in November of 2024 and purchased by the city. At the time, there were plans to turn the site into a major senior housing development, but the city found a new management team to renovate the property and restore it as a golf course. In February 2026, Bartlett selected Mallard Pointe Golf — which also operates a course in Sardis, Mississippi — to restore, reopen, and operate Quail Ridge under a 10-year management agreement.
Then came the unglamorous work that makes a course a course again. First-year renovation plans totaled roughly $1 million in capital improvements, with $475,000 going toward green restoration, $225,000 for irrigation system upgrades, and $100,000 for clubhouse renovations, according to figures from the City of Bartlett's Economic Development office. Greens and sprinklers don't make headlines, but they're the difference between a field and a fairway.
Why a town's only course matters
A municipal course isn't a resort. It's where a kid hits a first drive with borrowed clubs, where retirees have a standing Tuesday game, where you can walk nine after work for less than the cost of dinner out. When a town has exactly one of those and it goes dark, something communal goes dark with it. Bartlett deciding that this land should stay a place where neighbors spend four hours outside together — that's the kind of local news we'd like more of.
It fits a pattern we love watching across the South and Midwest: towns looking at a tired public course and deciding it's worth saving rather than paving. Public golf is some of the most democratic outdoor space America has, and every course that comes back keeps it that way.
Go play it
If you're in the Memphis area, the best way to thank a town for saving its course is to put a tee time on the books. Walk it if you can. Order something at the new restaurant. Buy a sleeve of balls from the new pro shop even though you have forty at home. Municipal courses live and die on rounds played, and reopening day enthusiasm matters most when it's still there in November.
And if a golf course at the edge of town is your idea of a good evening — the kind where the last three holes happen in that low gold light — you're our kind of person. That feeling is roughly the entire reason our Outdoors collection exists, and the No City Lights Tee was more or less made for the drive home after a twilight nine.
