Ohio's Newest Trail Is a Half Mile Long, and That's the Whole Point
East Harbor State Park on Lake Erie just opened Ohio's 23rd Storybook Trail — a half-mile path where kids read a picture book as they walk.
Ohio just opened a brand-new trail on the Lake Erie shore, and it's a half mile long on purpose. In late September, East Harbor State Park in Lakeside-Marblehead cut the ribbon on the state's 23rd Storybook Trail — a short walking path where a children's picture book unfolds page by page as you go, so the littlest hikers in the family have a reason to keep moving and something to read when they stop.
What happened
As ABC 6 in Columbus reported this month, the new trail at East Harbor spans roughly half a mile and is lined with child-height panels, each one displaying a page from a children's book. Cleveland 19 noted that the path includes interactive "action steps" that invite kids to hop, stretch, and move like the characters in the story — part reading nook, part obstacle course, all outside. The featured book is Blue Sky White Stars, a patriotic picture book celebrating the symbols and spirit of the American flag, and there's a book exchange box at the trailhead where families can borrow, share, and discover new stories during their visit.
This isn't a one-off, either. Ohio has been building Storybook Trails in its state parks since 2019, and the program features books from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the East Harbor trail is now open, and families, schools, and community members are invited to visit.
Why it matters
Most trail news celebrates distance — more miles, bigger networks, longer loops. This one celebrates the opposite: a trail short enough for a four-year-old to finish and interesting enough that they'll want to. Getting a kid to fall in love with the outdoors rarely starts with a ten-mile day. It starts with a half mile that feels like an adventure, a story that moves when they move, and a beach at the end of it. Twenty-three of these trails across Ohio's state parks means there's probably one within an easy drive of most families in the state — and now the Lake Erie shore has one of its own.
The bigger picture at East Harbor
The setting doesn't hurt. East Harbor is an 1,831-acre state park on the shores of Lake Erie with no shortage of ways to spend a day. The park offers swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking, disc golf, and ten miles of multi-use trails, and its campground is the largest in the Ohio State Park system, with a carry-in kayak ramp at the south beach that puts paddlers on the calmer waters of East Harbor for free. The neighborhood has history, too: the Marblehead Lighthouse, erected in 1821 to aid navigation in and out of Sandusky Bay, stands just east of the park. A new storybook path is a small addition to a big place — but it's exactly the kind of small addition that turns a campground weekend into a family tradition. It's the kind of unhurried, unfussy Ohio that we had in mind when we put together our Ohio collection.
Go walk it
Fall is a fine time to do this. The trail is free to walk, short enough for the stroller crowd, and the book exchange box means you can bring a gently loved picture book from home and trade it for a new-to-you one. Make a day of it: walk the Storybook Trail in the morning, hit the beach or rent a kayak in the afternoon, and swing past the lighthouse before you head home. And if you want to dress for the occasion, the O-H Tee works whether or not anyone within earshot answers with the I-O.
Common questions
Where exactly is East Harbor State Park?
East Harbor State Park sits about eight miles northwest of Sandusky on the shores of Lake Erie, on the Marblehead peninsula in Ottawa County — roughly an hour from Toledo and ninety minutes from Cleveland.
Is the Storybook Trail really just for little kids?
It's built for them — the panels are child-height and the whole route runs about half a mile — but there's no age limit on a good picture book, and the trail connects to a much bigger park when you're done.
Can we make a weekend of it?
Easily. East Harbor's campground is the largest in the Ohio State Park system, with full-hookup, electric, non-electric, and ADA sites, plus two Sherman Cabins and group camping — so the storybook walk can be the first chapter of a longer stay.
