A Future State Park Just Landed on Lake Palestine
In early October, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation secured 650 acres on Lake Palestine in East Texas for a brand-new state park.
Here's a good one. In early October, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation announced it had secured 650 acres of shoreline on Lake Palestine in East Texas — land that's headed for life as a brand-new Texas state park. That's hundreds of acres of lakefront that will belong, in the way that matters most, to everybody.
What happened
According to a Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation release dated October 2, the foundation is investing more than $10 million to secure 650 acres on Lake Palestine in Henderson County for a future Texas state park. The property, one of the largest contiguous landholdings with frontage on the lake, was acquired by TPWF on October 1, 2026.
If you haven't been, Lake Palestine is a proper East Texas reservoir — big, deep, and busy with fishing boats on a good Saturday. The lake reaches depths of 58 feet and is popular for boating, paddling, swimming and fishing for bass, catfish, crappie and sunfish.
Why it matters
Texas is overwhelmingly private land, which means public lakefront is rare and getting rarer. Every acre of shoreline that gets set aside for a park is an acre that stays open — for the kid learning to cast, for the early-morning paddler, for the family that can't afford a lake house but can afford a day pass. Per the foundation, the property offers significant potential for both conservation and outdoor recreation, and the plans reflect that: once developed, planned amenities include hike and bike trails, traditional and primitive campsites, day-use areas and lakefront access.
Part of a bigger pattern
This isn't a one-off. The Lake Palestine acquisition continues a long history of partnership between TPWF and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to secure significant properties for conservation and public recreation. Recent projects have included Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, Powderhorn State Park and Wildlife Management Area, Trinity River Wildlife Management Area and an expansion of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Quietly, steadily, the public map of Texas keeps growing — and this time the new pin lands on a lake in Henderson County, where the pines start getting serious.
It's the kind of news that reminds you Texas pride isn't just a slogan on a Texas State Pride Tee — it's people writing big checks so that a stretch of shoreline stays wild and open for the next hundred years.
What you can do
Patience first: this park will arrive in stages. TPWD plans to open the future park in phases, beginning with guided access, followed by day use and eventually full day and overnight access. And there's a real role for regular folks here — after TPWD purchases the property from TPWF, the agency will invite public input to discuss options for the future park. If you live anywhere near Tyler or Athens, keep an ear out for those public meetings and show up. Tell them you want campsites. Tell them you want a boat ramp. It's your park.
In the meantime, Lake Palestine itself is open for business — go fish it, paddle it, and picture what's coming. And if you want to wear your corner of the state on your chest while you're at it, our Texas collection has you covered.
