East Harbor State Park Just Opened a Storybook Trail on Lake Erie's Shore

Ohio's 23rd Storybook Trail opened at East Harbor State Park in late September — a half mile of picture-book pages along the Lake Erie shore.

In late September, a new Storybook Trail opened at East Harbor State Park in Marblehead, Ohio, as reported by Cleveland 19. It's a short walk where a children's book unfolds panel by panel along the path — a small, cheerful addition to one of the prettiest stretches of the Lake Erie shore.

What happened

On September 21, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources cut the ribbon on the newest Storybook Trail in the state system. Storybook Trails now appear at 23 Ohio State Parks, and East Harbor's is the latest. The idea is simple and kind of brilliant: each trail spans around half a mile and includes child-height panels displaying pages from children's books. Kids walk, read a page, walk some more, read the next one. Interactive "action steps" encourage children to hop, stretch, and move like the characters in the story — blending literacy, movement, and time spent outside.

The book chosen for this particular trail fits its lakeside setting nicely. The new East Harbor Storybook Trail features Blue Sky White Stars, a patriotic picture book celebrating the symbols and spirit of the American flag. And in a nice touch, a book exchange box at the trailhead encourages families to borrow, share, and discover new stories during their visit.

Why it matters

A half-mile trail is not a grand gesture. That's sort of the point. It's a reason for a family with a four-year-old to get out of the car, and it turns a walk in the woods into something a kid asks to do again. The program has roots, too — the state began creating these Storybook Trails in 2019, and it features books from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio, the free-books-for-kids program that has quietly become a fixture across the state. During the celebration of the new trail, a tree was planted in honor of Dolly Parton — which means in fifty years there will be a big shade tree at East Harbor that exists because of a country singer and some picture books. Ohio is a good place.

East Harbor, if you haven't been

East Harbor sits on the Marblehead Peninsula, that little thumb of land between Sandusky Bay and the open lake, in the same neighborhood as Lakeside, Catawba, and the ferry docks to the islands. It's beach-and-marsh country: swimming, birding, fishing, campsites close enough to the water that you can hear it. A storybook trail slots into that landscape perfectly — it's a destination for the smallest hikers in a park that already has plenty for everyone else. If you keep a running list of Ohio places worth a Saturday, this corner of the lake has always earned its spot, and now it has one more half mile of reasons. (We keep our own running love letter to the state in our Ohio collection.)

Go walk it

The East Harbor Storybook Trail is now open, and ODNR invites families, schools, and community members to experience it. Early October is arguably the best time of year on the lakeshore — the summer crowds are gone, the light is low and gold, and the cottonwoods are starting to turn. Pack a thermos, bring a book to leave in the exchange box, and let the kids set the pace. Half a mile takes a while when you stop to hop like the characters, and that's the whole idea. Given the book on the panels is about the flag, we'd be lying if we said we didn't think our Ohio State Pride Tee was the right thing to wear for the occasion.

Common questions

Where exactly is the new Storybook Trail?

It's at East Harbor State Park in the Marblehead area of Ottawa County, on the Lake Erie shore east of Port Clinton. The trail opened on a Monday in late September 2026, per Cleveland 19's reporting.

How long is the trail, and is it good for little kids?

It's built for them. Each trail spans around half a mile and includes child-height panels displaying pages from children's books, with interactive steps that encourage children to hop, stretch, and move like characters in the stories.

Are there Storybook Trails elsewhere in Ohio?

Yes — this is far from the only one. The trails have become a beloved feature at 23 Ohio State Parks, so there's likely one within a day-trip of wherever you are in the state.
